Why Is Whitecourt Known as the Snowmobile Capital of Alberta?

Snowmobiling is a popular winter recreation activity across Alberta, but with a large network of groomed trails and an annual snowfall of approximately 174 centimeters, Whitecourt has coined itself the snowmobile capital of Alberta. Whitecourt is also one of only a handful of municipalities that allow the use of Off-Highway Vehicles throughout the community, which makes accessing backcountry trails easy. Whether you’re an experienced snowmobiler or are new to the activity, you’re sure to have a great experience exploring the winter trails surrounding Whitecourt.

There are dozens of great snowmobiling trails to explore in Whitecourt, with a few main staging areas to start from. Eagle River Staging Area is located approximately 13 kilometers northeast of Whitecourt and boasts over 120 kilometers of trails. These trails are designed for all skill levels; however, it is always important to remember that changing snow conditions and weather can increase or decrease difficulty. You can also access the beautiful Grundy cabin from this staging area. The Groat Creek Staging Area and Golden Triangle Trail System are also great spots to start, offering 150 kilometers of snowmobile trails and 350 kilometers of trails respectively. Regardless of where you plan to start, it’s important to remember to always be prepared and pack the appropriate gear necessary for a safe trip so you can focus on having a great time.

Whitecourt Trailblazers Snowmobile Club

Part of the reason why Whitecourt has coined itself as the Snowmobile Capital of Alberta is because of the Whitecourt Trailblazers Snowmobile Club. This not-for-profit group was founded in 1979 and has been promoting the sport of organized snowmobiling in Alberta since. They also currently maintain over 485 kilometers of trails for their members and other snowmobilers visiting the area. The club offers memberships, which provide you with the opportunity to meet new riders and join a community of individuals who love the sport, and you will also get to help maintain the trails you ride.
